Pello Salaburu represents CBS in Argentina Visiting scholar and “special ambassador” Pello Salaburu represented the Center for Basque Studies at the II Congreso Americano de Centros Vascos in Necochea, Argentina in late November. His presentation on the history of the Center was very well received by the many participants and guests. Dr. Salaburu, former president of the Basque University, is in residence for a year at the Center. |

New publications by Linda White Linda White has recently published two articles on literary topics. “Atxaga’s Lone Woman and Mintegi’s Nerea eta biok: Two Different Views of the Female Basque Political Prisoner” was published in Journal of the Society for Basque Studies in America, vol. William Douglass is guest lecturer in Mexico In October, William Douglass appeared as a guest lecturer at the Universidad Iberoamericana of Mexico City, where he gave six hours of lectures within a Basque culture course on the topic of “Basques in North America.” |

Visiting scholar’s articles on Basque Americans appear in Basque press Pello Salaburu, resident scholar with the CBS for the academic year 2000-2001, has published various articles in the Basque press about Basque Americans and his experiences in the American West. A recent article, “¡Qué verde era mi valle!,” considers the challenges presented to Basque immigrants who left their family farmsteads in the green hills of Euskadi to become sheepherders in the high desert of Nevada. An earlier article discussed Dr. Salaburu’s meeting with Pete Cenarrusa, Idaho’s Secretary of State. Dr. Salaburu, former president of the Basque University, says he will continue to submit articles about once a month. Basque papers presented at American Anthropological Association meeting Joseba Zulaika, director of the CBS, and Roland Vazquez, visiting scholar, presented papers at the recent American Anthropological Association annual meetings in San Francisco in mid-November. Joseba Zulaika presented “Asymmetries in the Politics of Seduction and Global Culture,” concerning the negotiations between the New York Guggenheim Museum and Basque officials in the decision to build the Bilbao Guggenheim. Dr. Vazquez read his paper on “Publishing and Perishing: On Basque Texts, Violence, and (Be)Longing,” which discussed the parallels between real and rhetorical violence. |

Basque classes offered through correspondence and the Internet We are pleased to announce that the first two of a series of online course offerings is now available. Elementary Basque Language I (Basque C101, 4 credits) by Dr. Linda White offers an introduction to the language through the development of written and conversational language skills. Basque Culture (Basque C471, 3 credits) is an intensive study of the Basque people of southern Europe both in historical perspective and contemporary society. The course was developed by Dr. Joseba Zulaika, who also presents Bilbao Guggenheim Museum (Basque C460, 3 credits). By means of the famous museum, this course will explore the role of arts, architecture, museums and cultural industries in regenerating urban centers. The online/correspondence courses are offered through the University of Nevadas Department of Continuing Education (www.dce.unr.edu/istudy). Director Zulaika publishes articles Director Joseba Zulaika published an article, “Acts of Peace and War,” in The World Today (56:11) November 2000. The article discusses the current status of the Basque nationalist movement in Spain and political repercussions of ETAs fourteen-month cessation of terrorism, which they ended a year ago. Prof. Zulaika also published “Vieja luna de Bilbao,” in Bidebarrieta, (“Los Bilbaos Soñados/ Bilbo Amestuak”) VIII-2000, Bilbao. |

Joseba Zulaika visits Spain as debate participant Joseba Zulaika, director of the Center, participated in a debate on Nuevos paisajes, nuevos monumentos, on October 16 in Palma de Mallorca. The event was organized by Futurisme in honor of architect Jørn Utzon, designer of the Sydney Opera House. Other participants included architect Elías Torres and philosopher Gerard Villar. Camilo José Cela Conde served as moderator. While in Europe, Dr. Zulaika also gave a talk on Los centros de arte como revitalizadores del tejido urbano at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. |
