IKASI program

The Ikasi program (the Basque word for “learn”) was created to provide a learning experience for adults, so they could learn more about Basque culture. The idea originated at a Center for Basque Studies Advisory Board meeting in summer 2001. As Anita Anacabe stated, “The kids have Udaleku where they learn to dance, sing, play Basque instruments, and speak a little Euskara, but for years, adults in the community have felt the need for a time of their own, pared down to fit their schedules.”

Anita Anacabe, John Ysursa, and Linda White worked together to devise the general plan. The Center, in conjunction with N.A.B.O. Inc., decided to launch IKASI in 2002. The Basque American community responded enthusiastically, and the program was a success. The first IKASI program was held in Reno, June 26–29, 2002 with 48 participants. Our hope is that it can continue on a regular basis.

We have posted information and photos from the 2002 Ikasi program. If the idea interests you, check out the schedule and application for 2003—the program will be held in Elko, Nevada just prior to the Elko Festival. Please join us for the 2003 session!
