Basque Studies Summer School in Europe
At this time we wish to announce the possibility
of holding a summer school in the French Basque Country next summer.
Classes would be held in Ustaritz, where we have been offered use of a
newly-constructed facility. The summer school would be under the joint
auspices of the University of Nevada, Reno and academic groups in the
French Basque Country.
Essentially, the project would consist of a six
weeks’ session of classes. English would be the language of
instruction. There would be a course in spoken Basque (taught by native
speakers) and a course in Old World Basque culture. The student will
have the opportunity to earn six university credits. Enrollment would
be limited to a maximum of fifty students. The exact cost of the summer
school is undetermined as yet, but we believe that it will amount to
slightly under $1,000. This would include roundtrip airfare from the
West Coast, ground transportation in the Basque Country, six weeks room
and board, tuition, excursions, and insurance. The cost compares quite
favorably with the present economy class airfare to the Basque Country
(approximately $800).
A summer school experience in the Basque Country
would be invaluable to Basque-Americans or other persons interested in
the Basque cultural heritage. By holding the classes in Europe the
student will have the opportunity to gain firsthand, intimate knowledge
of the Basque Country. We shall be able to draw upon the services of
the leading Basque intellectuals of the day, who will be asked to
present lectures to the group. Finally, we would hope to broaden the
student’s experience by organizing weekend study excursions to points
of interest throughout the Basque Country.
Persons may qualify for the summer school either
as regular university students or interested auditors. Preference will
be given to those students who wish to register for university credit.
However, if space permits, we would welcome participants who simply
wish to attend classes without working for formal credit. If you are
interested, but are not sure whether you would qualify, please write
the Program Coordinator.
At this time we are attempting to sample interest
in the summer school. We would, therefore, ask everyone who is even
remotely interested in attending to write us. We must make a final
decision by December if we are to organize the project properly, so we
would ask you to reply immediately. Those writing in will receive
further information. There is, of course, no obligation at this time.
