Basque Studies Summer Session in Europe The Basque Studies Program of the University of Nevada, Reno will present a summer session in Basque Studies at Ustaritz (near Biarritz) in the French Basque Country from June 13 to August 10, 1970. Academic Program: The academic program will consist of three courses— Basque 150. Elementary Spoken Basque. 3 credits. This course will consist of intensive instruction and drill with native speakers. Students will be divided into small groups. Basque 351/651. Introduction to Basque Literature. 3 credits. This course will be taught by Professor Eloy L. Placer from the Foreign Language Department of the University of Nevada, Reno. It will consist of a review of the works written by Basque authors in Basque as well as in Spanish and French. Basque 365/665. Old World Basque Culture. 3 credits. This course will be taught by Professor Jon Bilbao of the Basque Studies Program of the University of Nevada, Reno. It will explore the geography, prehistory, history and social anthropology of the Basque Country, as well as linguistic and historical problems of the Basque Language. All courses will be conducted in English. Credits: Students may take a maximum of six credits; that is to say, any two of the three courses offered. Students may register for less than six credits or as auditors, but their fees will remain the same. Facilities: The summer session will be held in the Foyer de Sessions (Landagoyen) d’Ustaritz. This is a newly constructed facility providing comfortable living accommodations and adequate classroom facilities. Each student will be provided with a private room. The facility is located about one mile from the small community of Ustaritz in the midst of truly breathtaking scenery. It is about six miles from the cities of Bayonne and Biarritz. Cultural Events and Evening Programs: Arrangements will be made to provide guided lecture tours to nearby museums and historical sites. In addition, special lectures, motion pictures, performances by folk singing and folk dancing groups will be offered in the evenings. Each Sunday, there will be an organized tour to some point of interest in the Basque Country, including one special excursion to Pamplona to participate in the famous festival of San Fermin. Once or twice a week students will be provided with transportation to the nearby beaches of Biarritz and Saint Jean de Luz. Instruction in Basque Folk Songs and Dances: There will be evening instruction in Basque Folk Songs and Dances by professional instructors. Final Excursion: An intensive tour of the Spanish Basque Country will be made from July 22 to July 26, including visits to San Sebastián and Bilbao, the town of Guernica, the religious sanctuaries of Aranzazu and Loyola and the fishing villages of Bermeo and Lequeitio. Independent Travel and Touring: To enable students to broaden their experience through their stay in Europe, we have reserved a two-week period from July 27 to August 10 for independent travel or touring. Students will receive information regarding possible organized tours through Europe. The cost of such touring is NOT included in the summer session and must be borne by the participant. All students must plan to occupy themselves in some way for this final two-week period, since in order to qualify for group airfares we must travel to and from Europe as a group. No exceptions can be made. For the student who prefers to remain in the Basque Country during the period, or who is financially unable to travel, arrangements will be made to allow him to spend the time at minimal cost. Dependents: Dependents of registered students qualify for the low price affinity group airfare. That is, the parent, spouse or child (but NOT the brother or sister) of a student, may take advantage of our flight to reach Europe at an extremely reasonable cost, and we invite any dependent of a registered student to avail himself of the opportunity. If desired, arrangements may be made to provide dependents with living accommodations either in the Landagoyen Facility or at nearby hostelries. Cost: The cost of the summer session, including the round trip airfare from New York to Ustaritz, tuition for six credits, room and board during the session, weekend excursions and insurance, plus the five-day excursion in the Spanish Basque Country will be $995 per student (departure from New York). Students who wish to attend the session must make a deposit of $100 by February 1, 1970 at the latest. Payment of the balance ($895) should be made by May 1, 1970. Applications and deposits will be taken on a first-come, first-serve basis. Since registration will be limited to a maximum of fifty students, we urge you to make your deposit as soon as possible. In the unlikely event that student enrollment fails to reach twenty-five, the program would have to be canceled. Students would be notified of such cancellation by the end of February and deposits would be returned. Scholarships: We hope to have a number of scholarships available. Students who wish to apply for a partial or a full scholarship should request an application form, which must be returned by February 1970. Checks should be made payable to the Board of Regents, University of Nevada, Reno and sent to Program Coordinator, Basque Studies Program, University of Nevada, Reno, Reno, Nevada 89507. We urge you to give serious thought to this program. If you are not able to participate yourself, consider whether you know someone who might like to attend. If so, please call the program to their attention. We include an application form which may be torn from the Newsletter and returned along with the deposit.
