Highlights

William H. Jacobsen, Jr. published an article in the May 1970 issue of the magazine Quinto Lingo. The article is entitled “Basque is Beautiful” which is a discussion of some of the more unusual features of the Basque Language.

William A. Douglass published an article entitled “Background and Current Status of Basque Americans.” The article appeared in a new two-volume work called Bilingual Schooling in the United States, by Theodore Andersson and Mildred Boyer. The work appeared in 1970 and was published by the US Government Printing Office.

In September of 1970 the first volume of Jon Bilbao’s massive Eusko-Bibliographia was published in Europe by the Editorial Auñamendi of San Sebastián. The second volume is in press and should be out by Christmas.

In the spring semester William A. Douglass offered a course on Old World Basque Culture in the community of Winnemucca (Nevada). The course was given through the General Extension Service of the University of Nevada System.

In the spring semester Jon Bilbao offered a course in Elementary Spoken Basque on the Reno Campus of the University of Nevada, Reno System.

In the spring several Basque courses were approved by the College of Arts and Science of the Reno campus for regular inclusion in the curriculum. These included Elementary Spoken Basque 151 (a continuation of the existing course Elementary Spoken Basque 150) in the department of Foreign Languages, Old World Basque Culture which is cross-listed in the departments of Anthropology and Foreign Languages, and Basque Literature which is listed in the Department of Foreign Languages. This means that there are now four Basque courses incorporated into the curriculum of the Reno campus.

On June 15th, twenty-two students traveled to Europe to participate in the first Basque Studies Summer Session Abroad (for more details see article in this issue).

In April, Dr. Davydd Greenwood of Cornell University spent one week in Reno consulting with the Basque Studies Program. Dr. Greenwood is a social anthropologist who conducted field work for more than one year in the Basque community of Fuenterrabia (Guipuzcoa).

The April 1970 issue of the journal Current Anthropology contains an article entitled “American Anthropological Interest and Prospects in Basque Studies” by Grant McCall. The article contains information on the current status of Basque Studies interests on the part of American scholars and academic institutions.
