Kern County Basque Club

Mr. William Othart, president of the Kern County Basque Club, sent the following information concerning the club:

“No one here knows the exact date of the organizing of the Basque Club. Nearest time, date, and place was in September 1938 at the Pyrenees Café in East Bakersfield and since then it has been active.

All officers of the Club must be of Basque origin, although a non-Basque may be a member.

Membership at the present nears the 200 mark.

This organization is composed of county sheepmen, herders, cattlemen, farmers, ranchers, gardeners, truckers, bakers, car salesmen, firemen, dentists, doctors, oilmen, hair stylists, hotel owners, lawyers, a judge and honorary members (old timers).

The main event of the year is scheduled for June 6, 1970 the Annual Basque Club Bar-B-Q (lamb) at the Dante Hall west of the town. (Public is invited). Also there will be a Fall Bar-B-Q on September 5, 1970 and Christmas Bar-B-Q on December 5, 1970.”
