Idaho Basque Studies

There has been considerable Basque Studies interest in Idaho during the past academic year. During the spring semester, Father Ramon Echeverria has been teaching a course on Old World Basque culture for the anthropology department of Idaho State University. During the same semester, Miss Miren Rementeria has taught a Basque language course in Boise under the auspices of the Idaho Office of Higher Education. Both Father Echeverria and Miss Rementeria attended our 1970 study tour in Ustaritz.

The University of Idaho at Moscow has pursued over the past several years a policy of acquiring Basque books. Last winter they published a catalogue of their Basque holdings (which are now quite extensive).

Summer Session

To everyone’s disappointment, we were obliged to cancel this year’s study tour. We were, however, encouraged by the fact that the cancellation was not due to lack of student interest. More than fifty persons expressed varying degrees of interest in attending. However, late winter changes in airlines’ regulations, which increased the minimum qualifying for group fares from twenty-five to forty persons, made it impossible for us to proceed. We do plan to organize a 1972 summer study tour. Anyone interested in further information should write directly to William Douglass, Program Coordinator.
