The University of Nevada Press Basque Book Series Recently Published The Guernica Generation: Basque Refugee Children of the Spanish Civil War by Dorothy Legarreta Early in the Spanish Civil War, the unprecedented saturation bombing of the Basque city of Guernica shocked the Western world. Shortly after this unprovoked attack, more than 20,000 Basque children were hastily evacuated. They found safe haven in Mexico, England, the Soviet Union, and several countries in Europe. Dubbed the “Guernica Generation,” these youngsters became the first contingent of children to flee the destruction of modern weaponry. The history of this forced evacuation has been dramatically captured by Dorothy Legarreta. Based on recollections from the children who were evacuated far from their parents and homeland, the story details the trauma of these separations. “This is the first book to study in detail the evacuation of the Basque children, their treatment in host countries, and the effects of exile upon them.” – Library Journal 396 pages, illustrated, cloth, $18.75 Other Books in the Series A Book of the Basques by Rodney Gallop Beltran: Basque Sheepman of the American West by Beltran Paris as told by William A.
