University Studies in the Basque Country

Spring Semester

A number of openings are still available for the Spring 1985 programs in San Sebastián (Donostia), Gipuzkoa and Pau, France.

The San Sebastián program offers university level courses in Basque language, Basque and Iberian culture, history, political science, folkdance and cuisine as well as a course in economics. An intensive Spanish language and culture dimension is also available. In the intensive Spanish courses, for example, students with no previous exposure to the language take the equivalent of two years of college Spanish in one semester, in addition to a culture class. The spring semester begins on January 8.

At the present, thirty students from throughout the United States are participating in the San Sebastián Program. Eight American and European professors form the nucleus of the program, with Dr. Sandra Ott, an anthropologist from England, as its Director. The San Sebastián Program is hosted by the University of the Basque Country.

Five levels of intensive French language, culture and literature are provided by the Pau program. Qualified students may also enroll in the Basque Studies course available at the University of Pau. Spring classes begin on January 6.

Eleven Consortium students are presently studying on the Pau Program. Dr. Jean Decock, a professor of French at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, is the Program Director this fall. Dr. Cecile Lindsay of the University of Nevada-Reno will direct the Spring Program.

Six-Week Summer Studies Program

The six-week Summer Program offers three levels of intensive Spanish language and literature, elementary Basque language and courses in Basque and Iberian culture and history.

The Summer Studies Program takes place in Hondarribia, a picturesque resort and fishing village located on the Spanish side of the bay dividing Spain and France. Students are provided full lodging and board at the hostel and language school “Juan Sebastián Elcano.”
