California Senate Resolution The following resolution of the California Senate Rules Committee was passed in recognition of the contribution made by Ms. Marty Mitchell in compiling her photodocumentary exhibit on Basque activities in Plumas County, California. RESOLUTION California Senate Rules Committee by Senator John Garamendi WHEREAS, Marty Mitchell of Meadow Valley is deserving of special public recognition and highest commendations for her efforts to preserve the colorful history of Basque sheepherding in the Sierra Nevada; and WHEREAS, Marty, a former United States Forest Service reconnaissance engineer, came across carvings left by young Basque sheepherders in the aspen groves near their sheep camps all through the Sierra; and WHEREAS, The Basque sheepherding era that began in the 1860s peaked in the early 20th century, yet the boys and men left carvings and camps that reflected their philosophy and way of life; and WHEREAS, The Basque Studies Department at the University of Nevada-Reno put the entire Basque Studies library at Marty’s disposal, and the Plumas County Arts Commission and the California Council for Humanities aided her research by providing grants; and WHEREAS, After considerable research, Marty was able to combine photographs and rubbings of the carvings to create an historic art display for presentations at museums, historical societies, and fairs, and it is called, “Basque Sheepherders of the Plumas Sierra: and WHEREAS, Marty Mitchell has allowed Californians a rare opportunity to witness the fleeting evidence of an era which might have passed unmarked, now, therefore, be it RESOLVED BY THE SENATE RULES COMMITTEE, That the
Members take great pleasure in honoring and commending Marty Mitchell
for her efforts to document and preserve the folk art of the Basque men
who herded sheep in the isolated regions of the far northern Sierra;
