Basque Seminar Held

During the fall semester a special Basque Studies seminar was held at the University of Nevada-Reno on a weekly basis.  The lectures included the following:

      José Mallea – “Juan de Zumarraga: Sixteenth Century Patriarch of the Basque Colony of New Spain”

      Chantal Cramaussel – “The Basques and New Biscay: The Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries”

      Richard H. Etulain – “The Basque-Americans: New Research Opportunities”

      Gorka Aulestia – “The Basque Bertsolari (Troubador) and the Yugoslav Bard: A Comparison”

      William A. Douglass – “The Stem Family in Northern Iberia”

      Teresa del Valle – “Symbolic Interaction and Basque Ethnicity”

      Germán Basterra – “Language Policies and Socio-Linguistic Realities in the Basque Country: A Comparative Study of Two Fishing Villages”

Urioste Genealogy Available

Mr. Rafael Urioste of Texas has written an extensive manuscript on the Urioste family, following 15 years of research done mostly in South America. The study traces the family from the Middle Ages in Spain to the present day in Bolivia. The author is very interested in hearing from other Urioste descendants, and is willing to make available photocopies of the 200-page Spanish-language manuscript.
