Basque Studies Program Newsletter · Issue 33, 1986 Basque Genealogy We receive frequent requests for genealogical information. In most cases we are unable to be of much assistance since genealogical research requires access to parish and civil archives for birth, death and marriage records. We were recently contacted by the Oficina de Genealogías “Lope Garcia de Salazar” of Bilbao (Euskadi) informing us of their willingness to prepare genealogies on a commercial basis. The charges for their services depend upon the difficulty of compiling a particular genealogy. They indicate that they are best able to conduct genealogical research in Vizcaya. Normally they provide a family tree following the paternal line, references and sources utilized, a family shield of escutcheon, sample transcriptions or photocopies of the oldest document found and a description of the house in the Basque Country where the surname first occurs. Anyone interested in further information regarding this service should contact them directly at: Oficina de Genealogías “Lope Garcia de Salazar” Avenida Zumalacárregui, no. 105, 3° 48007 Bilbao (Euskadi) Spain Attention World War II Veterans We have received the following request: “José M. Romaña Arteaga, historian, native of Vizcaya (Euskal Herria Sur), wishes to hear from anyone [Basque] who was involved in World War II whether in intelligence, support operations, or as a combatant in Europe, the Pacific, Asia or North Africa. Please write indicating your involvement, your name, surname, dates and place of service and your birthdate. I am interested in contacting all Basque participants who served in the US armed forces whether they were born in the Basque Country or in the US of Basque parentage. I am writing a book to be entitled Vascos en la segunda guerra mundial (Basques in World War II).” You may write directly to: José Miguel Romaña Arteaga Calle Julio Urquijo, 11-3 B Bilbao – 14 Spain |
