Basque Sheepherders of the American West:
A Photographic Documentary

Photographs by Richard H. Lane; text by William A. Douglass

Anthropologist Richard Lane has captured on film the near solitary and nomadic existence of the Basque sheepherder in the American West. In addition to documenting each aspect of the sheepherder’s work, Lane also explores the sheepherder’s personal life, from the lonely sheep camps to the Basque boarding house to the colorful festivals held in the summer. William A. Douglass, coordinator of the Basque Studies Program at the University of Nevada-Reno has provided a fascinating text to accompany this photo-documentary which includes 20 color plates and 40 half tones. The text and photo captions appear in English, Basque, Spanish and French.

A Cup of Tea in Pamplona

by Robert Laxalt with drawings by George Carlson

In this new novella, distinguished Nevada author Robert Laxalt tells a compelling tale of smuggling and violence played out against the dramatic landscape of the Basque Pyrenees. The peasant Nikolas, who has received pressure to take over a horse smuggling business, questions whether he wants to forfeit his respectability for riches. Nikolas’s decision whether to better his station in life is forged by what happens on a night passage across the Pyrenees, and the retributions that follow. The work is beautifully illustrated with charcoal drawings by noted American artist George Carlson.

Of special note:

A Cup of Tea in Pamplona has been accepted in nomination for the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction. In addition, the author has been named 1986 recipient of the Tambor de Oro prize awarded by the Junta Rectora of San Sebastián, Spain, for his many contributions to the knowledge of the Basque culture.
