Distinguished Visitors

Euskaltzaindia

In December a three-person delegation from Euskaltzaindia (The Basque Academy) spent several days in Reno touring the Basque Studies Program. The purpose of the visit was to explore ways in which our two institutions could collaborate more closely. Mr. José Antonio Arana Martija, director of Euskaltzaindia’s library, spent considerable time consulting with department heads in the University of Nevada library familiarizing himself with technology and procedures. Mr. Xabier Gereńo, novelist, proposed a Basque literature in translation series to the University of Nevada Press that was subsequently approved by the Press Board. Mr. Enrike Knörr, ex-vice rector of the Vitoria campus of the University of the Basque Country met with several officials of the University of Nevada to discuss the possibility of preparing joint grant proposals to fund cooperative projects. The Euskaltzaindia delegation also visited the Newberry Library in Chicago (home of the important Bonaparte collection of Basque texts), the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. and New York Public Library.

Eusko Jaurlaritza

In January, Jokin Intxausti Larrauri, Counselor of the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Basque Government, visited the Basque Studies Program. Mr. Intxausti is charged with strengthening ties between the diaspora. He was recently in Argentina at the invitation of FEVA (The Federation of Basque Associations) and toured the American West contacting various Basque clubs and meeting with NABO (North American Basque Organizations, Inc.). During his visit to the Basque Studies Program, Mr. Intxausti explored ways in which the Basque government might be supportive of Basque-related activities in the American West.
