Basque, French and Hispanic Studies Programs in Europe

The University Studies in the Basque Country Consortium is now accepting applications for the 1986-87 programs in Pau, France and San Sebastián and Hondarribia, Gipuzkoa.

The San Sebastián Program offers one or two semester courses in intensive Basque and/or Spanish language, culture, history, literature, folkdance, cuisine and independent study. A special course in American Constitutional Law will also be offered in English this fall. Participants depart from New York on September 1 and spend one week visiting sites of artistic and historical interest in Madrid and three weeks in the village of Hondarribia before settling permanently in the oceanside city of San Sebastián on October 1.

The Summer Studies Program provides six-week long courses in Basque and Spanish language, culture and history June 23 – August 1. The Summer Program is located in the picturesque fishing and resort village of Hondarribia located on the southern side of the bay dividing Spain and France. The magnificent scenery, seafood cuisine, beaches and art colony have made Hondarribia a popular summer resort with the larger communities of Biarritz and San Sebastián within commuting distance. Non-traditional students are encouraged to participate. Past programs have been enriched by participants as “young” as 72 and from all walks of life.

The Pau Program offers one to three quarters of intensive French language, culture, history, geography, and literature. Basque classes are also available. Participants depart from New York and spend eight days in Brussels and Paris before traveling to Pau in southwestern France. A city of some 120,000 bordering on the Basque country, Pau provides an ideal environment in which to study the French language and culture. Nearby ski resorts in the Pyrenees and beaches on the Atlantic provide recreational activities.

Scholarships and Financial Assistance

As fully registered university students, Consortium participants are eligible to apply for regular university financial aid such as Pell grants, guaranteed student loans and scholarships which are available through the affiliate universities. In addition, three sources of financial assistance exist specifically to aid Consortium students:

Students registered through Boise State University may apply for the following scholarships:

The Anthony Robert Scott Memorial Scholarship;
The Domingo Ansotegui Memorial Scholarship; or
The Lynn Fereday Memorial Scholarship.

The recently established Simon and Grace Gorostordoy Memorial Scholarship provides low interest loans to Consortium students.

Scholarships are also available to members of Basque Clubs affiliated with the North American Basque Organizations, Inc.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to these families and individuals who have thoughtfully chosen to memorialize their loved ones through the above-mentioned scholarships.

The University Studies in the Basque Country Consortium is a project of Boise State University, the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and the University of Nevada-Reno. Consortium programs are hosted in Europe by the University of Pau and the University of the Basque Country. Enrollment is limited with available openings filled in order of applications received.
