Highlights
Gorka Aulestia spent the past summer in the Basque Country
researching the phenomenon of the Basque bertsolari for his doctoral
dissertation. While there he gave
two conferences at the Udako Euskal Unibertsitatea entitled “El
bertsolarismo vasco comparado con algunos otros fenómenos semejantes en
el mundo” and “El bertsolari Xalbador.”
Visiting Professor Gregorio Monreal completed
his academic year in Reno in May. He
then spent the summer in residence at the University of California
Berkeley before returning to the Basque Country in August.
In April visiting Professor Teresa del Valle
gave a paper on “Basque Family Support Networks” at the Future of the
Family Conference of the Family Mediation Center of San Francisco.
The “Basque Sheepherders of the Plumas Sierra”
photo exhibit prepared by Marty Mitchell and distributed by
the Basque Studies Program was displayed at the Susanville Art Gallery
(Susanville, California). The
exhibit was sponsored by the Susanville Art League and the Lassen County
Historical Society.
In April the Basque Studies Program staff prepared an
exhibit for Multicultural Awareness Day held at the University of
Nevada-Reno.
In
June, Director Greg Nava (writer and director of the film El Norte)
and actor William Hurt visited the Basque Studies Program to gather
background information for a forthcoming Basque-related motion picture.
In August Teresa del Valle gave a seminar
entitled “Gender Relations in Basque Culture: Political and Economic
Context” at Oregon State University and a seminar on “Women’s Power
in Basque Culture: Practice and Ideology” sponsored by the Women’s
Studies Board of Portland State University.
Gorka Aulestia published an article “A
Basque-English Dictionary Made in the USA” in the proceedings of the
First International Basque Conference in North America.
He also published “The Nationalism of Sabino Arana y Goiri” in
the last issue of the Journal of Basque Studies in America.
Jose Mallea is currently teaching a beginning
Basque class at UNR to twelve students.
Julie Chung, Lori Rebeiro and Kathy
Portillo, student assistants, recently joined our staff.
Carmelo Urza is currently in San Sebastián
participating in the first semester of this year’s University Studies in
the Basque Country Consortium program.
William A. Douglass published “Recuento de
Vascos: El Censo de 1980 de los Estados Unidos,” in Boletin del
Instituto Americano de Estudios Vascos vol. 26, no. 142 (Buenos
Aires).
