Basque Studies Program Newsletter · Issue 34, 1987
News of the Basque Library Collection
María Otero-Boisvert, the Basque Studies
Librarian, has been busy these last few months attempting to bring
order to the Basque Studies collection.
Since assuming her position in January, she has created a card
catalog built on the standards of the Library of Congress and the Anglo
American Cataloging Rules, 2ed. To
date, she estimates that the new LC catalog reflects approximately 24%
of the collection.
The original catalog created by Jon Bilbao continues to be very
necessary for the completion of research since it represents a larger
share of the entire collection. Therefore,
although she will not be adding to it, it is still in use.
The librarian reports that the rate of acquisition has risen
dramatically this year, surpassing by far the previous rate of 1,000
titles per year. There has been
a noteworthy rise in the acquisition of Basque language materials also
in the last year. This increase
reflects the publishing “boom” which is currently taking place in
Euskadi.
This summer Ms. Otero-Boisvert attended the
American Library Association’s conference in New York City.
In addition to attending various programs of interest, she was
able to speak with several distributors of European material with the
aim of receiving catalogs from many of the publishing houses on the
continent. She hopes in this way
to keep pace with new publications outside of the Basque Country which
may belong in the collection. Further
efforts in the area of collection development will take the librarian
to Euskadi in the late fall. While
there she plans to renew old contacts and make new ones with people and
institutions in the local publishing and book trades.
She will consult with Jon Bilbao and his staff on future plans
for the collection.
As a final item, it should also be mentioned that
Ms. Otero-Boisvert has become active in the state library association
in Nevada and has taken over responsibility for the editing of the
association’s newsletter, The High Roller.
A Major Art Event
The Tasende Gallery of La Jolla, California (820
Prospect Street) is sponsoring a major exhibit of the works of famed
Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida. The
opening ceremonies included presentation of a new film and book.
The film, entitled Eduardo Chillida and directed by
Lawrence Boulting, won a prize at the 1985 Paris Arts Film Festival.
The book Chillida was written by noted art authority,
Peter Selz and published by Harry N. Abrams.
The exhibit consists of 27 sculptures, including four monumental
pieces, and some 19 works on paper. It
will run from October 24 to December 20 and is open to the public
Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
