University Studies in the Basque Country The 1987-88 Consortium programs are now well underway. In August the 28 Summer Program students returned home after six weeks in San Sebastián. More than 50 students are currently enrolled in the fall and spring semesters of the San Sebastián (Spain) and Pau (France) Programs. Consortium programs offer a wide selection of Spanish, French, Basque and Italian language courses, as well as courses (taught in English) in history, anthropology, political science, business, economics, literature, teacher education, folkdance and cuisine. All academic coursework is credited in the U.S. through Consortium universities and may be transferred to a student's home institution. Applications are now being accepted for the Spring 1988 San Sebastián and Pau Programs. SUMMER 1988 PROGRAM Seven Spanish courses (elementary through advanced) and two elementary Basque language courses will be offered in addition to Basque and Iberian history and Basque and Iberian culture. These courses are taught by an exceptional faculty composed of Eli Areizaga, Ignacio Beti, Jon Bilbao, Carmen Kamps, Michael Morris, Patricia O'Connor, Felix Menchacatorre and Teresa del Valle. We are pleased to announce that two distinguished U.S. professors will offer courses in their area of specialization in the 1988 Summer Program. Dr. Pat Bieter, professor of Education at Boise State University, will teach "Theories of Instruction" (graduate and undergraduate levels) and direct independent study in teacher education. Dr. Bieter organized the Oñate Program and has been instrumental in promoting Basque studies in Idaho. Dr. Robert Clark, a professor of political science at George Mason University, will teach "The Impact of Modernization on Traditional Basque Culture" and direct independent study. Dr. Clark is the author of The Basques: The Franco Years and Beyond and The Basque Insurgents. We are delighted Dr. Bieter and Dr. Clark will share their expertise with the summer students. THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA After years of informal collaboration with the Consortium, the University of Iowa has become a formal sponsor of the San Sebastián Program. Iowa, a "Big Ten" university with a reputation for academic excellence, will greatly enhance Consortium programs. We look forward to a rewarding relationship. NEW ITALIAN CAMPUS The Consortium has established a new campus in Turin, Italy. This program will emphasize an international business and economics curriculum (in English), but will also offer language, culture and other humanities courses. This program has been developed in conjunction with the Schools of Business and Economics of the U.S. Consortium Universities and the School of Business Administration of the University of Turin. We hope the experience garnered from organizing our campuses in Spain and France will provide the basis for developing a quality business and economics program in Italy. SCHOLARSHIPS We want to thank Boise's Euskaldunak and Oinkari organizations for matching our scholarship to club members participating in Consortium programs. We are also grateful for the availability of the Domingo Ansotegui/Lynn Fereday Memorial and the Simon and Engrace Gorostordoy Memorial Funds. The opportunities made available by these generous contributions greatly enhance the education of deserving students and provide ongoing dividends to the clubs and committees. INFORMATION PACKET The Consortium is now accepting applications to all 1988-89 programs. Enrollment is limited, with students admitted in order of applications received. Early enrollment to next year's programs has increased dramatically so we encourage students to apply as quickly as possible.
