A Singular Honor BSP Professor Emeritus Jon Bilbao was recently named to Euskaltzaindia (the Basque Language Academy). The appointment, which is the highest academic award conferred within Basque Studies circles, was made in recognition of Bilbao’s lifelong dedication to the field. His massive work, Eusko-Bibliographia, the standard reference work in Basque Studies, and his ongoing bibliographic research as director of the Institute of Basque Bibliography (Vitoria/Gasteiz) constitute the bedrock upon which serious Basque scholarship rests. It is therefore particularly appropriate that he be accorded this unique recognition. Aupa, Jon! A Book on Basque Cuisine The Basque Book Series of the University of Nevada Press recently published the work Traditional Basque Cooking. History and Preparation. Translated from the Spanish original, it is the most important book of famed gastronomer José María Busca Isusi. While it contains many recipes, including all of the most famous dishes in Basque cuisine, this is much more than simply a cookbook. Rather, the author discusses the history of Basque cuisine from prehistoric to modern times, devoting considerable space to the kinds of foods and their preparation. The late José María Busca Isusi has written several books on Basque cuisine and was the acknowledged authority on the subject. He created several prize-winning dishes of his own and wrote a cooking column for the newspaper El Diario Vasco. Traditional Basque Cooking is well illustrated with drawings by the artist Nancy Peppin. It may be obtained from the University of Nevada Press at a cost of $19.95. The Basque-English Dictionary Project We are pleased to announce that the Basque-English dictionary project received a two-year grant in the amount of $90,394 from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The award will provide funding to permit completion of the second volume (English to Basque). The first volume (Basque to English) is completed and is currently being edited by the University of Nevada Press. We wish to acknowledge the critical assistance provided by the Friends of the Basque Studies Program. It was one of the conditions of the grant that $20,000 in matching funds be raised from private sources. The past fund raising effort of the Friends made it possible to comply and therefore receive the full benefits of the NEH award. We therefore want to express our profound gratitude to all those who donated to the project. |
