Writers Hall of Fame Award

Robert Laxalt was one of two recipients of the first annual Nevada Writers of the University Library at UNR. A reception was held in the library on April 22 to honor Laxalt and the late Walter Van Tilburg Clark. The recipients' names will be etched on a marble wall near the entrance to the main library on campus. This award will be presented annually to honor writers who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the culture and literary tradition of the state of Nevada.

A New Basque Saint

We recently received word from Oficina de Genealogias "Lope Garcia de Salazar" of Bilbao that on June 19 Pope John Paul is scheduled to canonize Blessed Fray Valentin de Berrio-Ochoa y Aristi as a saint of the Catholic Church. The new saint was born in the Vizcayan town of Elorrio February 15, 1827, son of Juan Isidro, native of Elorrio, and María Mónica of Anzuola (Guipuzcoa). At 18 years of age Valentin entered the seminary of Logroño and was ordained a priest when 24. At age 26 he joined the Dominican order and four years later was sent as a missionary to Manila, Annam and, finally, Tonkin (Indochina). In Tonkin he served as a bishop. On November 1, 1861, he was decapitated and thereby martyred for his beliefs.
