Highlights

In May Jose Mallea defended his dissertation entitled "Juan Zumarraga, Bishop of Mexico, and the Basques. The Ethnic Connection." The outside member of his committee was Dr. Guillermo Porras Muñoz, who came from Mexico City for the defense. In August Dr. Mallea was awarded his Ph.D. degree from UNR in Basque Studies with an emphasis upon history.

In July William A. Douglass attended the Twelfth International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences held in Zagreb, Yugoslavia. He gave a co-authored paper (with Joseba Zulaika) entitled "ETA Violence and the Basque Political Process" in a session on war and peace.

In September Gorka Aulestia attended the EURALEX (European Lexicographers) International Congress in Budapest, Hungary, where he gave a project report on the Basque-English dictionary.

In September Nerea Lete of Rentería, Spain, arrived in Reno to begin a year of residence. Ms. Lete is the first student from the Basque Country to receive a Basque government scholarship to attend UNR as part of the cultural agreement signed last spring between the Basque government and state of Nevada Officials during President José Antonio Ardanza's visit to the United States.

In August María Otero-Boisvert, Basque Collection Librarian, left Reno for the Columbia University library where she has been employed as Latin American bibliographer. Her duties have currently been assumed by library assistant Marc Ugalde on an interim basis while a search is conducted for a permanent replacement.

Kepa Fernández de Larrinoa, who is currently writing an M.A. dissertation on Basque festivals of the American West for Western Ontario University (Ontario, Canada), spent the summer in residence with the Basque Studies Program conducting field and archival research.

William A. Douglass published an article entitled "The Basques in Nevada" in the most recent issue of Nevada Public Affairs Review which is devoted to articles on Nevada's ethnic groups.

In May Program staff presented a week-long Elderhostel course on Basque culture sponsored by UNR's Division of Continuing Education. Linda White taught language, José Mallea taught Basque history, William A. Douglass taught Basque anthropology, Gorka Aulestia taught literature, Janet Inda taught cooking, and Carmelo Urza organized several events including a film showing. The course was attended by the maximum of fifty participants, and there was an extensive waiting list.

There are several student employees of the Basque Studies Program this fall. These include Carol Belaustegui, Kathy Portillo and Lori Rebeiro. Also, Hasliza Aris is working as an Administrative Aide with the USBCC Program.

Adjunct Professor Santra Ott recently consulted with Granada Television of Great Britian in production of an hour-long documentary film. Entitled The Basques of Santazi, the work was based upon Dr. Ott's research in a French Basque village. The film was one of twelve chosen for the Disappearing World film festival held June 15-21 at the National Film Theatre in London.

Volunteer Michelle Thornburg assisted with preparation of the last issue of the Newsletter. Eskarrikasko!

In 1972 Miren Edurne Beitia and Carlos Zarabozo attended the BSP's summer program in the Basque Country. They were recently married in Washington, D.C. where both are employed by the U.S. Government. Zorionak!

Gorka Aulestia published an article entitled "Vida y obra de Xalbador" in the Journal of the Society of Basque Studies, Vol. 8 (1988).

William A. Douglass published an article entitled "The Second World Basque Congress" in the Journal of the Society of Basque Studies, Vol. 8 (1988).

Gorka Aulestia published four book reviews in World Literature Today, Vol. 62, No. 3 (summer 1988). These included reviews of Gabriel Aresti, Literatura Lanak; Xabier Lizardi, Kazetari Lanak; Arantxa Urretabizkaia, Saturno; and the 1986 Euskal Herriko Txapelketa Nagusia.

José Luís de la Granja Sainz, history professor at the University of the Basque Country (Leioa) and former visiting scholar with the Basque Studies Program, recently published an article entitled "Fuentes históricas sobre el nacionalismo vasco en la Universidad de Nevada-Reno" as part of the proceedings of the X Congreso de Estudios Vascos: Archivos, Bibliotecas y Museos, held April 21-25, 1987, in Iruñea.

Recent visitors to the Basque Studies Program included Mr. Leopoldo Porras, consul general of Chile in San Francisco; Professor Rudolf P.G. de Rijk of the University of Leiden; Dr. Fernando de Necochea, assist provost, Stanford University; and Professor James R. Robbins, University of Adelaide, South Australia.
