A Landmark Publication The Basque Studies Program and the University of Nevada Press are pleased to announce publication of the first volume of a Basque dictionary. Available in June, the Basque-English volume contains over 50,000 entries embracing five spoken dialects of Basque and the literary form Euskera Batua. The dictionary project was initiated in 1979 and required ten years to complete. During that period lexicographer Gorka Aulestia has been assisted by many individuals in both the United States and Europe, but particularly by his main collaborator Linda White. Over the years funding for the project has come from many sources--including grants from the Summer Institute of Linguistics and the National Endowment for the Humanities, as well as salary support from the Basque Studies Program. Many of the readers of this Newsletter have made personal donations to the project. In short, the dictionary has for many years been our number one priority and has involved the effort and financial support of literally hundreds of individuals and institutions. Pride in the accomplishment should be shared by all. We are equally pleased to announce that compilation of the second volume, or English-Basque, is completed and the work is now in the editing stage. While considerable time-consuming refinement remains to be done, we are hopeful that it will be available to the public sometime during 1990. You may reserve your copy of the Basque-English Dictionary by returning the enclosed coupon to the University of Nevada Press. Goian Bego, Dorothy! It is with deepest sorrow that we note the tragic death, in an automobile accident, of Dorothy Legarreta. Dorothy was an adjunct professor with the Basque Studies Program and authored the book The Guernica Generation: Basque Refugee Children of the Spanish Civil War in our Basque Book Series. Scholarship Available Students of Basque descent who are currently attending UNR are eligible to apply for the Teresa Laxalt Scholarship. It provides $1,000 in support for the coming academic year. Interested persons should provide a letter stating their major and career goals and a copy of their college transcript through fall semester of 1988. Submit the materials to the Basque Studies Program prior to April 15, 1989. Marc Ugalde was the recipient of the 1988-1989 award. A Book Donation We wish to thank Alfrida Poco Teague of Santa Paula, California, for a collection of Basque books. The donation was made in memory of her father, Peyo Poco (1874-1961) and mother, Kattalin Iriart (1876-1963). The Poco family once owned the well-known Smoke Creek Ranch in western Nevada.
