Highlights
In
May William Douglass attended a conference on Italian family
history held at Bellagio, Italy, where he presented a paper entitled
"The Joint Family Household in Eighteenth Century South Italian
Society." He then traveled
to the Basque Country for a week of administrative activities for the
Basque Studies Program.
Professor
Jose Mallea joined our staff in July.
Dr. Mallea will teach Basque history and conduct research on Basque
topics.
William Douglass published the entry "Basques" in the
new edition of the Encyclopedia Americana.
Dr. Douglass also published an article entitled "Musings of
a Native Son," which appeared in both the journal Halcyon
and East of Eden, West of Zion: Essays on Nevada edited by
Wilbur S. Shepperson (Reno: University of Nevada Press).
Joseba
Eguibar Artola, a rising star in the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV),
visited the Basque Studies Program on February 14, 1989.
Mr. Eguibar is the spokesperson for the EEB (National Executive
Committee of the PNV), president of the Provincial Executive Committee
in Guipúzcoa, and a Territorial Delegate of Culture and Tourism.
Mr. Eguibar spent the month of February
traveling the U.S. with the United
States Information Agency to discuss various processes of American
government at the federal, state, and local levels, including the
marketing, publicity, and campaign management of presidential
campaigns.
William
Douglass published an article entitled "Crítica de las últimas
tendencias en el análisis del nacionalismo" in the book Sociología
del nacionalismo edited by Alfonso Pérez Agote and published by
the Universidad del País Vasco.
In
June Linda White presented a lecture and slide show on
"Amerikanuak: Basques of the American West" to a chapter of
Welcome Wagon in Sparks, NV.
Three
visitors spent a month at the Basque Studies Program during the summer.
During August Josu Rekalde Izaguirre, a professor of fine
arts for the University of the Basque Country, created a photographic
record of iconographic representation of Basque culture by Basque
immigrants to Reno, Nevada. The
photographs will become a part of the graphic archives of the library
of the School of Fine Arts in the Basque University.
María
Asunción Cenoz Iragui of the "Xabier Zubiri" school in
San Sebastián researched her doctoral thesis, "Enseñanza-aprendizaje
del inglés como segunda y tercera lengua."
She was accompanied by her husband Josu Perales Ugarte, a
teacher with HABE, who studied English and worked on translations.
Angel
Ansa Goenaga, a professor with the University of the Basque
Country, researched the attitude of Reno Basques toward the Basque
language.
Jill
Berner and Marcelino Ugalde attended a conference on
"Collections Management: Manuscripts, Photographs, and Printed
Materials," held at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City,
Nevada, in order to better manage the Basque Studies collection.
The
Basque Studies Program participated in Multicultural Awareness Day,
April 21, 1989, with a display of Basque-related books and artifacts.
Employees Marcelino Ugalde, Lisa Tipton-Corcostegui,
Nerea Lete, and Itxaso Sánchez performed Basque dances
as members of the University Basque club Zenbat Gara.
Isabelle
Darrigrand of Biarritz, France, visited the Basque Studies Program
in July and August.
Linda
White, Carmelo Urza, Jose Mallea, Jill Berner,
Nerea Lete, Itxaso Sánchez, Janet Inda, and Mark
Etcheberry combined their talents to present a week-long
Elderhostel program (May 14-19) on the subject of Basque culture.
Two
4-H groups visited the Basque Studies Program in July to learn
about the Basques.
Resident
director of the Pau program Bernard Campistron and his wife Nicole
Arambel spent the month of August at the Basque Studies Program.
Dr.
Carmelo Urza and the University Studies Abroad Consortium moved
into new offices adjacent to the Basque Studies Program in July.

Ms.
Eneida Andueza was the recipient of the Basque Government
Student Scholarship that allows a Basque student to come to the
University of Nevada, Reno to study for one academic year.
Ms. Andueza will be studying English and assisting in the Basque
language classes.
