Basque-English Dictionary Available

After ten years of painstaking effort, computer adventures, and proofreading over nine miles of printout, the Basque-English Dictionary by Gorka Aulestia is for sale by the University of Nevada Press. Within the 672 pages of the dictionary are English equivalents for 50,000 Basque words in six dialects, thirty-three verb paradigms, and forty-six pages of information about the Basque language and grammar. Many last names are included as entries, as well as the names of villages and provinces. Completion of the Basque-English volume was made possible by many donations, including a major fundraising effort by the Friends of the Basque Studies Program, as well as a donation by the Summer Institute of Linguistics.

A second volume, the English-Basque Dictionary, by Gorka Aulestia and Linda White, is now in press and should be available next year. Funding for the second volume was provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

To order the Basque-English Dictionary, you may use the University of Nevada Press order form included in this newsletter, or write or call the Press at:

Cobb Donation

Charles Cobb, Jr., and family of Coral Gables, Florida, donated $1,000 to the Basque Studies Program in June to provide a summer stipend for a visiting scholar. This generous donation was made in memory of Michel and Marie Mutuberria. Eskerrik asko!

Sister Cities

Reno, Nevada and San Sebastián, Guipúzcoa now have an official Sister City relationship, thanks to Reno city council resolution 4,443 and mayors Peter J. Sferrazza of Reno and Xabier Albistur Marín of San Sebastián. The cities are about the same size and both have tourist-based economics as world-famous resort cities. The two cities will work together as members of Sister Cities International to originate activities that will benefit the populations and economies of both.

On August 27, Lord Mayor Albistur's designated representative, Lieutenant Mayor Jabier Aguirre Elorza, was in Reno to attend official ceremonies confirming the Sister City status of Reno and San Sebastián. Acting Mayor Kathryn Wishart exchanged gifts with Aguirre during the ceremonies, including books about their respective regions. Wishart also presented Aguirre with a collage of photos of Nevada prepared by Linda Dufurrena.

Sister Cities International has been working to link interested cities since the late 1950s. Over 807 U.S. cities are now linked to other communities in eighty-eight countries.
