Basque Hall of Fame

On Sunday, August 27, during the Ninth Annual Basque Hall of Fame awards presentation by the Society of Basque Studies in America, lexicographer Gorka Aulestia, Basque Studies Coordinator William A. Douglass, and distinguished author Robert Laxalt were inducted into the Basque Hall of Fame for their long-term contributions to the study of Basques and their culture and language. Emilia Doyaga, vice-president of the society, presided over the ceremonies. The University of Nevada Basque Studies Program was also honored for its contributions during the same ceremony, held at the Peppermill Hotel in Reno, Nevada, on the occasion of the dedication of the Monument to the Basque Sheepherder.

Dr. Aulestia was honored for his Basque-English Dictionary (published by the University of Nevada Press) and his extraordinary contributions to Basque culture in America. Dr. Douglass was chosen for Hall of Fame membership on the basis of over twenty-two years of research on Basque topics and his contributions to the preservation of Basque culture through his many publications. Robert Laxalt was honored as the distinguished son of a Basque sheepherder, for his lyrical writings of life as a Basque, and his contributions to Basque culture.

Frankie Sue Del Papa, Nevada's Secretary of State, said that the Basque Studies Program is a center of excellence of which the state is proud. She added, "We promise to support the wonderful efforts of the Basque Studies Program."

The Society of Basque Studies in America, sponsors of the Hall of Fame awards, was founded in 1979 in San Francisco. The Society is dedicated to the study and dissemination of Basque culture in America. Memberships are available for $20, $30 and $50. Members receive the Society's annual Journal of the Society of Basque Studies in America. For more information write to:
