Scholarships

Banco Guipuzcoano Scholarship

We are pleased to announce that Ms. Josephine Bilbao and Ms. Denise Inda were selected to receive the 1989-1990 Banco Guipuzcoano Scholarships.

Ms. Inda is the daughter of Janet and Mike Inda of Reno, Nevada, and is a junior at the College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho. She is majoring in engineering and art.

Ms. Bilbao is the daughter of Julio and Julie Bilbao of Boise, Idaho. She is a sophomore at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, majoring in English.

Both of these young women are accomplished Basque dancers, play the txistu, and have excellent academic records. We are delighted to have such outstanding recipients for the first Banco Guipuzcoano scholarships.

The Banco Guipuzcoano of San Sebastián, Guipúzcoa, established the scholarship this year in order to facilitate the study of Basque culture by American Basques studying on the USAC San Sebastián program. Each of the scholarships carries a stipend of approximately $2,200. Our sincerest appreciation goes out to the Banco Guipuzcoano and our congratulations to Ms. Bilbao and Ms. Inda.

Teresa Laxalt Scholarship Awarded

Ms. Jennifer Gascue of Sparks, Nevada was selected to receive the Teresa Laxalt Memorial Scholarship for the 1989-90 academic year. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a Nevada resident of Basque descent who is an undergraduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Sally Hacker Memorial Scholarship

In memory of Dr. Sally Hacker, three $1,500 scholarships will be available each semester for USAC students who wish to study the Basque language through the San Sebastián program. Dr. Hacker was a full professor of Sociology at Oregon State University. She taught for the 1985-1986 San Sebastián program while studying Basque. Dr. Hacker will be missed by those who knew her.
