Goian Bego Eugene Azpeitia Staff and friends of the Basque Studies Program were saddened by the death in October 1989 of Eugene Azpeitia, a faithful patron and Reno resident for many years. Mr. Azpeitia's family donated a portion of his books and papers to the Basque Studies Program library, for which we are very grateful. Ms. Nere Lete of our staff, a native of Renterķa, Guipśzcoa in the Basque Country, composed the following poem in honor of Eugene: Zure herritik urrun, Dagoeneko ahazturik belar xamurraren usaina, Ahazturik ixiltasunaren deidarra... Hizkera atseginaz Gure izenak banan-bana Goxoki ahozkatu zenituen. Errepikapenaren errepikaz aspaldi agurtu zenuen AMA LURRA ta ZURE arteko zilbor este bihurtu ginen. Sekula hautsiko ez den lotura sakona. Horregatik Irisarrin, Mendien oiartzuna haizearen altzoan Dantzatzen denean, Erreken zipriztinak airean zabaltzean, Ta ardien joaleak dindilinka entzutean, Zure izatea gugan esnatuko da, Eta berriz ere zure irribarrea Helduko zaigu gogora. ETORKIZUNEAN BAT EGIN ARTE EUGENIO! Far from your homeland, Forgotten is the smell of tender grasses that grow there, Forgotten is the call of the silence... In your pleasant way, You pronounced our names Sweetly one by one. We became the umbilical between YOU and The MOTHER LAND That you bade farewell so long ago. That deep tie will never be broken. For that reason, In Irisarri, When the mountain echo dances in the air, When the babble of the brook and the tinkling of the Sheep bells are carried on the wind, Your being will awaken in us, And once again your smile Will come to mind. UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN, EUGENE! |
