Basque Gastronomic Society Honors UNR

On December 17, 1989, the Basque Gastronomic Fraternity (Cofradía Vasca de Gastronomía/Gastronomiazko Euskal Anaiartea) named the University of Nevada, Reno an honorary member of its society. Since 1983 the USAC program in San Sebastián has offered courses on Basque cooking at the Cofradía. Professor Jon Bilbao and author Juanito Echeverría accepted the honor on behalf of the University at a ceremony held at San Sebastián's city hall. They presented a written acceptance from Chancellor Mark Dawson.

Members of the society humorously agree to:
* Respect gastronomy as they would a woman, with fidelity and love.
* Honor, by means of their appetite, fish from ocean and stream; game, whether winged or hoofed; and all other victuals of whatever origin at the table, for there are no better friends of man than an ox and the pig.
* Never fast voluntarily, nor follow vegetarianism or any dieting regime; dedicate to each meal the time and respectful care that it deserves.

The Basque Hotel

Robert Laxalt's new novel, The Basque Hotel, has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. The nomination was made by Myrick Land, author of ten books and former book editor for Look magazine, and Warren Lerude, author and former Pulitzer Prize-winning editor and publisher of the Nevada newspaper, the Reno-Gazette Journal.

The Basque Hotel is available for $17.95 from the University of Nevada Press, University of Nevada, Reno, Reno, NV 89557-0012.

Consortium Scholarships Awarded

Three students have been awarded scholarship support from the Basque government. Carma Caughlin will receive $3,875. Trent Schmidt will receive $3,000 and Brad Chisholm was awarded $1,725. Ken Bradshaw and Michael Larrey each received a $250 Sally Hacker Memorial Scholarship. These monies will help defray the costs of participation in the University Studies Abroad program in San Sebastián.

Basque Minor at UNR

Many classes in Basque subjects are offered every year through the University Studies Abroad Consortium, but some classes are also offered on the University of Nevada campus in Reno. Over a three to four year period, we offer all the classes necessary to complete a minor in Basque Studies on the Reno campus. These include the first and second year Basque language sequence, as well as nine additional credits in Basque history, anthropology, literature, or language, for a total of 23 credits.

This spring, Linda White and Eneida Andueza are offering Basque 102 and 203 (first and second year language classes). Ms. White is also teaching an independent study in Basque language. Dr. José Mallea is teaching Basque history.

The Basque Studies Program also offers a tutorial Ph.D. program for those interested in pursuing research in the area of Basque studies. Scholars may complete a Ph.D. in Basque studies with an emphasis upon history, anthropology, linguistics, or literature by conferring with a mentor and pursuing their Ph.D. through this unusual tutorial program. Candidates must have a Master's Degree in order to apply and should be highly self-motivated. For more information, write or call the Basque Studies Program and request the tutorial Ph.D. information packet.
