1990 Summer Program in San Sebastián This year's Summer Program in the Basque Country is scheduled to take place June 27 to August 11. Four levels of intensive Spanish language will be offered, as well as an intensive elementary Basque language course. Undergraduate and graduate level courses on Basque history and Basque culture will be taught in English. The role of formal and informal education in the reaffirmation of cultural identity will be examined in an education course entitled Education, Language, and Culture in the Basque Region and Catalonia. A second education course on the philosophy of education will also be taught. A three-day visit to Madrid and field trips to the provinces of Vizcaya, Alava, Guipúzcoa, and the French Basque Country are included in the program. Applications are also being accepted for the fall 1990 and spring 1991 USAC programs. Course offerings for those programs include: San Sebastián: Basque and Spanish language, history, anthropology, teacher education, political science, economics, art history, folk dance, and cuisine. Pau, France: French and Basque language, culture, art history. Turin, Italy: International business and economics, culture, Italian language. For an information packet on these programs, please contact: Carmelo Urza, USAC University of Nevada Library Reno, NV 89557-0012 (702) 784-6569 USAC Program Expansion The University Studies Abroad Consortium signed an agreement on January 25, 1990 with Mayor Albistur of San Sebastián and Imanol Murua, the governor of Guipúzcoa, that will allow the program to add a European dimension to its San Sebastián program. Until now the USAC program was limited to American university students. With the support of the city of San Sebastián and the provincial government, the USAC will accept European students as well in its San Sebastián program beginning in the fall of 1990. New Summer Program in Bayonne The University Studies Abroad Consortium has established a new four week long summer program in the French Basque city of Bayonne. The program will offer intensive courses in French and Basque, Basque culture, and French literature. The group will leave the U.S. on June 27, 1990 and spend three days in Paris before traveling to Bayonne. Field trips are planned to the Spanish Basque Country. There will be an overnight outing to St. Jean Pied de Port and surrounding villages. The program ends on July 28. Bayonne is a city of approximately 65,000 situated on the Basque coast just north of Biarritz. Students may opt to live in the university dormitories or with families. |
