Highlights

Dr. William A. Douglass will be on sabbatical leave from July 1, 1990 until June 30, 1991. In Dr. Douglass's absence, Assistant Coordinator Linda White will administer the Program. Dr. Douglass will spend the month of September lecturing in Australia and then move on to North Carolina for the remainder of the academic year.

On April 7, 1990 William A. Douglass was in Agnone, Italy, where his book L'Emigrazione in un Paese Dell'italia Meridionale was presented during the Convegno sull'Emigrazione. L'Emigrazione is a translation of Dr. Douglass's book Immigration in a South Italian Hill Town.

Dr. Joseba Zulaika joined the Basque Studies Program in July as Basque Scholar. Dr. Zulaika is a renowned anthropologist whose many publications include the book Basque Violence: Metaphor and Sacrament, recently published by the University of Nevada Press.

William A. Douglass and Joseba Zulaika collaborated on an article that appeared in Comparative Studies in Society and History, Vol. 32, No. 2, April 1990. The article was entitled "On the Interpretation of Terrorist Violence: ETA and the Basque Political Process."

Joseba Zulaika attended a conference on July 10 at the University of Santiago de Compostela where he gave a paper entitled "Terrorismo político y teoría antropológica." On July 13 he delivered another paper, "Modelos de comportamiento ritual y violencia vasca," at the Universidad Internacional Menendez Pelayo in Santander, Spain. Also, the Spanish version of Dr. Zulaika's book on Basque violence, Violencia vasca: metáfora y sacramento, was published in April by the Nerea publishing house in Madrid.

Zenbat Gara, the University of Nevada Basque club, participated in the Jaialdi 1990 events with the Zenbat Gara dance troupe. Dancing in Boise in June were: Lisa Tipton-Corcostegui, Enrique Corcostegui, Ibon Mendibelzua, Marcelino Ugalde, Itxaso Sanchez, Itsaso Olaizola, Nere Lete, Xabier Bengoechea, Susie Drake, Bruce Frazier, Sam Chacon, Angie Erquiaga, Paul Woodin, and Regina Erquiaga.

Linda White is teaching Basque 101 and 203, first and second year Basque language, during Fall 1990. During the same period, Joseba Zulaika is teaching Anthropology 466, "Old World Basque Culture."

Dr.María José Azurmendi, a linguist from the University of the Basque Country, visited the Basque Studies Program in May and June. Dr. Azurmendi's trip was funded in part by a travel stipend from the Basque Studies Program and the University Studies Abroad Consortium.

The Basque Studies Program hosted and taught an Elderhostel session on the Basques May 13-19, 1990. Linda White taught the Basque language and moderated a panel discussion on the role of women in Basque culture. Dr. Jose Mallea taught Basque history. Dr. Carmelo Urza taught Basque culture. Librarian Ellen Brow introduced the Elderhostelers to the Basque Studies Program, and Jill Berner hosted visitors to the library collection.

Cynthia Irvin arrived at the Basque Studies Program on August 3, 1990, from Duke University to confer with Dr. Zulaika on terrorism and use the Basque Studies library collection. Ms. Irvin was the recipient of a Basque Studies Program travel stipend. Dr. Benjamin Tejerina of the University of the Basque Country also received a travel stipend this summer and spent from August 8 to September 22 at the Program, researching Basque language and nationalism.

Dr. María Elisa Zorriqueta, visiting professor from the University of the Basque Country, left in September after a seven-month residence with the Basque Studies Program.

Imanol Galdos and Itziar Iriondo were chosen by the Basque Government to receive its scholarship to enable them to spend a year at the University of Nevada, Reno studying English and helping with the elementary Basque classes.

Jaione Lanborena will spend the fall semester at UNR learning about oral history methods and computer approaches to information access. Her visit is sponsored by Fundaci¢n Trokoniz, a private foundation in the Basque Country.

Dr. John Tuthill of the Department of History at Georgia Southern University visited the Basque Studies Program in August and September while conducting research on the social and institutional history of medieval Navarra.

Nerea Lete, Itxaso Sanchez, and Eneida Andueza, all former recipients of the Basque government scholarship, returned home to the Basque Country this past summer. The Basque Studies offices feel empty without them. Farewell and best wishes!
