Basque Ph.D. Offered

The Basque Studies Program offers a tutorial Ph.D. in Basque studies for the aspiring professional. In order to qualify for admission you must already possess an M.A. degree in anthropology, history, or foreign languages. The key word in this program is "tutorial," which means that the student works closely with the appropriate scholar here at the University of Nevada, Reno while devising and completing a project leading to a doctoral dissertation. The entire program of study is designed around this objective. The candidate might only spend a year in residence at UNR (to meet the minimal residency requirement) before attending another American or European university to work under the guidance of a world expert in the topic.

For more information or an application packet, please contact the Basque Studies Program.

Christmas Selections:
New Items from the Basque Book Series

The striking photos and stirring text of A Time We Knew: Images of Yesterday in the Basque Homeland by William Albert Allard and Robert Laxalt deserve a place under every Christmas tree this year. Allard and Laxalt, two internationally known artists, have combined their talents to create a stirring chronicle of rural Basque culture before the dragon of the industrial age raised its ugly head. A Time We Knew is available for $34.95.

On a more political note, Robert Clark's new book, Negotiating with ETA: Obstacles to Peace in the Basque Country, 1975-1988, is an examination of the negotiation attempts with ETA, Euskadi Ta Askatasuna. The price of Negotiating with ETA is $29.95.

Also available for Christmas this year is the English-Basque Dictionary by Gorka Aulestia and Linda White. >Several years in the making, this exceptional resource contains 25,000 English entries and their Basque equivalents, as well as indications of dialect, and sells for $40.00.

Also, the Basque-English Dictionary, now in its second printing, is available again for $45.00.

And finally, if you have not yet had a chance to make a copy of Robert Laxalt's The Basque Hotel your own, do not miss out this Christmas. Based on the author's upbringing in Carson City, Nevada by immigrant parents who ran a boardinghouse, the novel tells a poignant, often humorous tale about a boy's rite of passage during the depression. The Basque Hotel is still priced at just $17.95.

Basque Monument Print Available

The Basque Studies Librarian, Ellen Brow, has designed and hand-printed a broadside featuring a block print of the Monument to the Basque Sheepherder. Sculptor Nestor Basterrechea's poem from the monument is presented on the work in three languages: Basque, Spanish and English. We are pleased to offer these attractive 12"x25" prints for $15.00 each, plus $2.00 postage and handling; checks should be made out to Board of Regents. Proceeds will be used to support the Basque Studies Program and the Black Rock Press, Getchell Library, where the broadside was printed.

Teresa Laxalt Scholarship Awarded

This year two outstanding young students have been chosen to share the Teresa Laxalt Memorial Scholarship for the 1990-91 academic year. Ms. Tina Marie Echeto and Ms. Carolina Izoco will each receive $500 to help defray the costs of their education. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a Nevada resident of Basque descent who is an undergraduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno.
