Occasional Papers Available For those who are ready to delve more deeply into their culture and origins, the Basque Studies Program Occasional Papers Series offers serious reading on various topics of interest to Basques and scholars involved with Basque subjects. From anthropology to music, the titles in the Occasional Papers Series cover a broad range of concerns. Arriaga, the Forgotten Genius, by Barbara Rosen, is the very readable life story of Juan Crisóstomo Jacobo Antonio de Arriaga y Balzola, a Basque composer of the nineteenth century who is considered by many to be Iberia's only great classicist. Ms. Rosen also examines Arriaga's works and includes photographs and a discography in this charming book. Essays in Basque Social Anthropology and History includes articles on Basque hotels, Basques in Colombia, and Basque legends. The list of contributing authors is a distinguished one: Jesús Azcona, Roslyn M. Frank, M.E.R. Nicholson, Elena Arana Williams, Teresa del Valle, Jacqueline Urla, Jeremy MacClancy, Rachel Bard, Román Basurto, Angel García-Sanz Marcotegui and Alejandro Arizcun Cela, William A. Douglass, Kay Hummel, Jerónima Echeverría, and Gretchen Osa. Basque Politics: A Case Study in Ethnic Nationalism, edited by William A. Douglass, consists of eleven essays on such topics as the French Revolution, Carlism, and post-Franco Spain as they relate to Basque political thought. The authors are: Gregorio Monreal, James E. Jacob, Renato Barahona, Vicente Garmendia, José Luis Granja, Dorothy Legarreta, Stanley G. Payne, Robert P. Clark, Cyrus E. Zirakzadeh, Marianne Heiberg, and Joseba Zulaika. Also available through the Occasional Paper Series is the beautiful photo essay Chillida at Gernika: Birth of a Monument, with introductory essays by Thomas M. Messer, director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, and distinguished Nevada author Robert Laxalt.
