Vice-Rector Echeverría Visits BSP On August 30, 1990, Javier Echeverría Ezponda, the Vice-Rector for International Affairs and Cooperation Programs of the University of the Basque Country, visited the Basque Studies Program. Dr. Carmelo Urza provided Vice-Rector Echeverría with a tour of local scenery and arranged a meeting between the Vice-Rector and the BSP staff. Present at the meeting were Coordinator William Douglass, Assistant Coordinator Linda White, Librarian Ellen Brow, and Professors Joseba Zulaika, José Mallea, Benjamín Tejerina, María Elisa Zorriqueta, and Carmelo Urza. Discussions centered on the mutually beneficial interrelationships between the Basque University and the Basque Studies Program. Vice-Rector Echeverría was in Reno for only a day. Basque Monument A year ago the National Monument to the Basque Sheepherder was dedicated at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno, Nevada. The 23-foot bronze sculpture by Basque artists Nestor Basterrechea was in place at the time, as was the walking trail with four bronze plaques which described Basque immigration history and the seven-foot bronze plaque depicting Basque settlements in the U.S. Several other parts of the monument were not ready for the dedication ceremony. The Monument Committee is pleased to announce that these elements have been completed as originally designed. Primarily, the massive bronze plaque (a donors plaque, a major donors plaque, and an "In Memory Of" plaque) have been affixed. Twenty new trees have been planted, as well as dozens of new plants and flowers, and a new parking lot has been developed on a site approaching the monument. A new 4' x 26' "Basque Monument" sign has been put up at the north entrance to Rancho San Rafael on Virginia Street. The monument entrance is on Virginia Street just north of N. McCarran Blvd. Visitors are welcome. Furthermore, the erection of an harrimutilla or "stone boy" is planned along with a new trail. USAC Scholarships The Basque government, in conjunction with the USAC and the Basque Studies Program, has provided approximately $10,000 in scholarships to fund grants to several 1990-91 San Sebastián Program students: Angela Burke, Ron Deter, Michael Jauregui, Nancy Membrez, Anita Mendizabal, Christopher Rosebrook, Marianne Schaffeld, Christopher Upchurch, and Dylan Westfeldt.
