Gastanaga Donation

Eugene Gastanaga has recently donated $5,000 to the Basque Studies Program, a gift that is greatly appreciated. Historically, we have depended on the generosity of those interested in supporting research in Basque subjects. Over the years many others have also contributed to the ongoing support of the Program's goals. This support makes it possible for us to continue our current projects and will assist us in supporting future research. Whenever you are in Reno, please remember to stop by the Basque Studies Program and see your generous support at work.

Belated Thanks

In our last issue, a photograph appeared on page 11 of Assistant Coordinator Linda White and Basque sculptor Mikel Lertxundi, but the photographer was not mentioned. We would like to thank Mr. Javier Güenaga Argoitia for taking the photo and providing us with a copy to use in our newsletter. Mr. Güenaga is a cousin of the artist.

A Time We Knew

One of the newest additions to the Basque Book Series published by the University of Nevada Press is A Time We Knew, with text by Robert Laxalt and photographs by William Albert Allard. A Time We Knew is an emotional visual record of a peasant culture that is rapidly disappearing.

Publisher's Weekly says that Laxalt's poetic vignettes combine with seventy photographs "to create a spellbinding flow of words and images...Allard's photographs glow and, with the text, form a prepossessing volume that allows a poignant glimpse of a vanished lifestyle."

This strikingly beautiful book sells for $34.95 and is available from the University of Nevada Press, Reno, NV 89557.
