Supreme Court Justice Springer
Speaks in San Sebastián

In October, Nevada Supreme Court Justice Charles E. Springer spoke to a group of law professors of the University of the Basque Country and to local members of the judiciary. The program was organized by Gregorio Monreal, professor of law and former rector of the University of the Basque Country in collaboration with the University Studies Abroad Consortium. Previously, Justice Springer spoke to American and Italian professors and students at the University of Turin. The Turin speech was sponsored by the Scuola di Amministrazione Aziendale of the University of Turin in collaboration with the USAC.

Studies Abroad

The University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC), established nearly nine years ago for the purpose of offering American students the opportunity to study in the Basque Country, continues to grow and flourish. In 1991-92 more than two hundred and fifty students participated in USAC programs, the vast majority in the Basque Country.

We are particularly excited about the new six-week summer Bayonne Program which offers intensive French and/or Basque language, culture, history, and French literature. The program begins with a three-day tour of Paris.

The Consortium is now accepting applications for its 1991 summer and fall programs.

Basque Ph.D. Offered

The Basque Studies Program offers a tutorial Ph.D. program for those interested in pursuing research in the area of Basque Studies. Scholars may complete a Ph.D. in Basque Studies with an emphasis on history, anthropology, linguistics, or literature by conferring with a mentor and pursuing their Ph.D. through this unusual tutorial program.

Candidates must have a Master's degree in order to apply and must be highly self-motivated because of the tutorial nature of the program. Research assistantships may also be available.

If you are interested in applying, write or call the Program and request the tutorial Ph.D. information packet.

Basque Minor Expanded

Undergraduates at the University of Nevada, Reno may minor in Basque Studies. Although this has been an option for many years, the selection of courses accepted for the minor has been expanded, and it is now more convenient than ever to complete a minor in Basque Studies.

Students attending courses in San Sebastián through the University Studies Abroad Consortium will benefit most from the expansion, for the newly eligible courses are taught on that program. Information about the Basque Studies Minor may be obtained by writing the Assistant Coordinator, Basque Studies Program, University of Nevada, Reno, NV 89557.
