Teresa Laxalt Scholarship Awarded The 1991-92 recipient of the Teresa Laxalt Memorial Scholarship is Ms. Denise Inda. An engineering student who also spent a year studying in the Basque Country, Ms. Inda will receive $1,000 to help defray the cost of her education. The Teresa Laxalt Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a Nevada resident of Basque descent who is an undergraduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno. The Basque Elderhostel The fourth Basque Elderhostel was held at the University of Nevada, Reno from May 19 through May 25, 1991. Elderhostels were created to provide senior citizens with an opportunity to continue the learning experience throughout life by means of brief but concentrated sessions of classes on various topics around the U.S. and throughout the world. Although the Basque Elderhostel is organized and administered by the University of Nevada's Continuing Education department, the faculty and staff of the Basque Studies Program provide teachers for the classes. The 1991 Basque Elderhostel gathered a distinguished faculty and expanded course offerings. Anthropologist Joseba Zulaika taught Old World Basque Culture, Basque Troubadours, Basque Nationalism, and Basque Art. Historian Jose Mallea gave lectures on Basque Mythology, History of the Basque Language, and Basque History. Linda White, assisted by Jill Berner and Lisa Corcostegui, taught the Basque Language component. The husband and wife team of Lisa and Enrike Corcostegui provided a broad overview of Basque music and dance. The Corcosteguis also host two hours of Basque music every month during a segment of the public radio show, One World, which airs from 9-11 p.m. on Sunday nights in the northern Nevada area (KUNR-FM, 88.7). Ellen Brow, Basque Librarian and Jill Berner provided tours of the Basque Studies Program and information about the collection. Evening programs were offered by Tom Radko, Director of the University of Nevada, Press, Janet Inda and the Zenbat Gara dancers. Forty-five Elderhostelers attended the week of classes and evening programs and although perfection is always elusive, the vast majority of participants had a splendid educational week. |
