What’s In a Name?

Onomastics is the study of names and naming, an issue of historical importance to Basques. We are pleased to announce that Euskaltzaindia, the Academy of the Basque Language, is planning to hold the Fourth Onomastics Conference in Reno, Nevada, September 2-4, 1992. The theme of the conference is Basque-American-Philippine proper names (both geographical and surnames).

Topics discussed at onomastics conferences in the past have included the toponymy (or place names) of the Basque provinces and other areas, problems in determining the origins of place names and surnames, and the Americanization of Basque surnames in the West.

Linda White, co-author of the English-Basque Dictionary, is researching Basque place names in the American West for presentation at the conference. If you know of a town, landmark, ranch, street, or business in your area with a Basque name or with the word "Basque" in its name, please write, call or fax:
