Basque Studies Program Newsletter · Issue 46, 1992 Goian Bego We were saddened by news of the death of Emmett Elizondo on August 6, 1992 in Grand Junction, Colorado. A self-made man, Elizondo came to America in 1915 at the age of 18. He made his living for many years as a sheepman. He was the owner and president of the Colorado-Utah Livestock Company and the Curecanti Sheep Company. Later he helped organize the Fruita State Bank and served on its board of directors until 1986. Long a supporter of the activities of the Basque Studies Program, Emmett Elizondo will be missed by many. Goian bego! Correction In our last issue we acknowledged the passing of the great José Miguel (Joxe Miel) de Barandiarán, but in doing so we inadvertently included some errors about his life. Professor Ignacio Olábarri Gortázar from the University of Navarra took the time to remind us that Barandiarán returned to the southern Basque Country in 1953, and did not begin his regular university teaching until 1964, the year in which he was named professor of Basque Ethnology at the University of Navarra, where he continued to give classes until 1982. We apologize for the errors and refer interested parties to Barandiarandar Jose Migel: Euskal-kulturaren aitalen (Kardaberaz, 1980), by his nephew Luis de Barandiarán Irizar, for a more in-depth look at his life and career. |
