Donibane Exhibit

The Donibane photo exhibit opened on August 18 at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, Nevada. Donibane is a group of photographers who have joined forces in an attempt to give photography the highest possible level of accomplishment within the artistic context of the Basque Country. Members of Donibane include Pedro Zarrabeitia, Ramón Serras, Konrado Mugerza, and María Elisa Zorriqueta, a former visiting scholar with the Basque Studies Program who spent July and August in Reno taking care of last minute details for the exhibit.

Teresa Laxalt Scholarship Awarded

The 1992-93 Teresa Laxalt Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Enrike Corcostegui, currently studying engineering. Corcostegui is deeply involved in the Zenbat Gara Dantzari Taldea, but still manages to maintain the highest academic standards. He will receive $1,000 to help defray the costs of his education.

The Teresa Laxalt Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a Nevada resident of Basque descent attending the University of Nevada, Reno.

SALALM Conference

The Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials (SALALM) held a conference in Austin, Texas June 2-4, for which former Basque librarian Ellen Brow organized and moderated a panel, Basques in America, on Basque bibliography. In addition, Ms. Brow presented a paper entitled “Basque Violets for Basque Terrace-ists: Contemplating a Level Five Collection.”

Also participating were Basque Bibliographer Emeritus Jon Bilbao (“Vascos en USA: problemas bibliográficos”), Luis Moreno (“Eusko-Bibliographía: antecedentes, estado actual y proyectos”), and María Isabel García Mazo (“Base de datos de bibliografía vasco-americana”). Linda White also submitted a paper, “Basque on the Title Page,” presented on her behalf by Ellen Brow.
