Dictionary Odyssey

Vincent Elordieta lives in Georgetown on Prince Edward Island in Canada, and like many others, four years ago he ordered the Basque-English Dictionary. However, a year later it had not yet arrived. He wrote to the University of Nevada Press, and another dictionary was sent out at once. Then out of the blue, last October, he received yet another package from the Press and discovered a copy of the Basque-English Dictionary inside, slightly bent at the corners but still in fine shape.

Mr. Elordieta was puzzled at first. He could not figure out why he had received a second copy of the dictionary, especially three years later. But a close examination of the package mailing label provided a major clue. Mr. Elordieta’s address in Georgetown, Prince Edward Island, was correct down to the postal code, but instead of Canada someone had written South Africa as the national destination. It seems there are two prince Edward Islands in the world, and the first dictionary sent to Mr. Elordieta was directed to the wrong island!

In a letter to Carmelo Urza (Coordinator of the University Studies Abroad Consortium), Mr. Elordieta wrote, “I think you should place the enclosed dictionary in a glass case, with a history of its travels.” The mailing label shows that it was postmarked in Reno, Nevada on October 30, 1989, and it was received by Dorotea Vicente Elordieta in Georgetown, Canada on October 20, 1992. We agree that this dictionary should have a place of honor as a world traveler.
