Eusko Ikaskuntza Honors the BSP Basque Studies Coordinator William A. Douglass and Chancellor Mark Dawson were invited by Eusko Ikaskuntza to travel to the Basque Country in December to participate in a tribute to the Basque Studies Program in honor of its first twenty-five years. Gregorio Monreal, president of Eusko Ikaskuntza and former visiting scholar with the Basque Studies Program, helped organize the tribute that took place at the Palacio Miramar in Donostia-San Sebastián on December 19, 1992. In the announcement of the tribute, Eusko Ikaskuntza stated, Eusko Ikaskuntza (the Society of Basque studies) wants to express to the University [of Nevada, Reno] its support for and recognition of the immense work carried out by the Basque Studies Program on behalf of Basque culture on the American continent during the last twenty-five years. Eusko Ikaskuntza is aware that the Basque Studies Program today constitutes a solid point of reference in the international domain of Basque culture, not only for the wealth of the library sources that it has managed to accumulate, but also for the quantity and quality of its publications, and for the activities of all types that it organizes to spread knowledge of Basque culture. Five universities took part in the ceremonies and sent representatives to laud the accomplishment of the Program: Jesús Ma. Eguiluz, Rector of the University of Deusto; Alejandro Llano, Rector of the University of Navarra; Juan José Goiriena de Gandarias, Rector of the University of the Basque Country; M. Gout, President of the University of Pau; and Juan García, Rector of the Public University of Navarra. Also present were Joseba Arregi, Minister of Culture for the Basque Government, and Jesús Javier Marcotegui, Minister of Culture and Education for the Government of Navarra. It was the first time the five rectors of the Basque universities had ever appeared together for such a function. The Basque Studies Program provided photos and information about activities down through the years for an exhibit of Program accomplishments. Dr. Douglass and Chancellor Dawson both urged a continuation of cooperation between the BSP and the universities and scholarly organizations of the Basque Country, for in Douglass words, In the final analysis, an isolated Basque Studies Program in Reno would make little sense and with time would certainly die. Thus, I assure you that we are open to, and desirous of, future collaborations. |
