University Studies in the Basque Country

The University Studies Abroad Consortium is now accepting applications for its 1993 summer and fall semester programs.

The six-week summer program (June 29-August 15) in the beautiful fishing and resort city of Saint Jean-de-Luz is directed by Marie Pierre Arrizabalaga, a native of the area, who also teaches the course on Basque and French culture. In addition, Dr. Jacques Bourgeacq, a professor of the University of Iowa, will offer a graduate and undergraduate course on “Initiation in Literature and Culture.” Professors of the four levels of intensive French language and literature and of Basque language are native speakers. In addition to a three-day visit to Paris upon arrival, the group will use its weekends to visit the Pamplona Fiesta and to explore Saint Jean Pied-de-Port, the Pyrenean Caves, Pau, Lourdes, Hondarribia, San Sebastián and Loyola. Students live with local families for the duration of the program.

The summer San Sebastián program, directed by Felix Menchacatorre, has been restructured into two four-week sessions, May 26-June 26 and June 30-July 31. Students may opt for either session or for both. Available courses include four levels of intensive Spanish language, Basque and Iberian Culture, Basque and Iberian History and elementary Basque. In addition to a three-day tour of Madrid, students will visit Pamplona, Iparralde, Bizkaia, and Gipuzkoa.
