Highlights
William Douglass published an article “Ama Lur” in the book Ama Lur y el País Vasco en los años 60 edited by Gurutz Jauregui, Félix Maraña and Juan Miguel Gutierrez (San Sebastián: Euskadiko Filmotegia).

Linda White presented a paper entitled “Wildmen, Witches and Wanderlust: No Basque Science Fiction?” at the Science Fiction Research Association Conference held in Reno, Nevada June 17-20, 1993. Ms. White also moderated two panels on science fiction from abroad.

Joseba Zulaika presented a paper entitled “Writing Terrorism: Facts, Fiction and Discourse” at the workshop The Anthropology of Europe organized by the Amsterdam School for Social Research in Amsterdam, Holland.

Patricia O’Connor, veteran professor of the San Sebastián study abroad program, successfully defended her dissertation at the University of Cincinnati in September. Congratulations Dr. O’Connor!

William Douglass published an article “The Famille Souche and its Interpreters” in the journal Continuity and Change, Volume 8, no. 1.

Jose Mallea continues his work to preserve the Basque tree carvings of the American West through photos and videotape. He is currently coordinating his efforts with Tahoe National Forest officials. In 1993 Dr. Mallea was awarded 4,000,000 pesetas by the Amerika eta Euskaldunak Committee through the Basque government to continue with this research.

Dr. Antón Uriarte Cantolla of the Universidad del País Vasco (Donostia) has been chosen as the Visiting Scholar to the Basque Studies Program by the Basque Government. Dr. Uriarte’s field of study is physical geography.

Amagoia Guezuraga and Olatz Goikouria were chosen by the Basque Government to receive the year-long scholarships for studying English in Reno and helping with the Basque language classes offered by the Program. They arrived August 22, 1993 and will stay through May.

William Douglass published an article “The Basques of North Queensland, Australia” in the book Homenaje a Francisco de Abrisketa (Bolibar, Bizkaia: Sociedad Bolivariana del País Vasco) edited by Roman Basurto Larrañaga.

Estibalitz Amorrortu has returned to Reno to teach first and second year Basque on a letter of appointment for the Basque Studies Program. Ms. Amorrortu is pursuing a Master’s Degree in English at the University of Nevada, Reno. She was a 1992-93 recipient of the Basque Government Scholarship.

William Douglass published The Catalan Factor in Australian Immigration History as No. 5 in the Ken Garrad Working Papers in Hispanic Studies issued by the Department of Romance Languages of Monash University of Melbourne, Australia.

Javier Cillero is currently employed by the Basque Studies Program as a translator. Mr. Cillero’s duties include a broad range of Program activities. He is also engaged in translating Dickens’ novel Hard Times into Basque on assignment from the Basque translators’ association (EIZIE) and the Basque government.

William A. Douglass published an article “In the Mirror: Reflections on the Origins of the Basque Studies Program” in the Revista Internacional de los Estudios Vascos, Volume 38 (1993.1).

Linda White participated in the University of Nevada, Reno’s Gifted and Talented Program sponsored by the Honors Program. Ms. White spoke to 25 high school students on August 12 about “Basques in the American West.” The University’s Basque Cultural Association, Zenbat Gara, also performed for the group after dinner that evening.

Joseba Zulaika is currently teaching Old World Basque Culture (Anthro/Basq 466/666) to a class made up of as many graduate students as undergraduates.

Rose Marie Bruballa, a representative of the Agence France Presse, visited the Basque Studies Program on August 10, 1993 as part of her U.S. tour.

Linda White spoke on “Basques in the American West” on July 14, 1993 at a Sierra Pacific meeting organized by Karen Foster. The group dined at Louis’ Basque Corner in Reno.

Jose Mallea and Joan Brick each had an article published in Sierra Heritage, Volume 13, no. 2 (September/October 1993). Dr. Mallea’s article is entitled “The Basque Connection”; Ms. Brick’s is “A Celebration of Basque Dancing.”
