Racial/Cultural Awareness Award

Zenbat Gara, the Basque Cultural Association of the University of Nevada, Reno, was presented with a $1,000 award on May 20, 1993 for sponsoring the best program on campus promoting cultural and racial awareness. The award is appropriately named the Racial and Cultural Awareness Award. The money must be spent on activities that will assist Zenbat Gara in continuing its promotion of racial and cultural awareness.

President Marcelino Ugalde says, “The award money will be used to enhance the Association’s collection of traditional folk dress worn by the dance group or to purchase improved sound equipment for the group’s performances. Dancing is one of the most important ways we spread cultural awareness throughout the community.”

Art Exhibit in Reno

The Basque artist Andres Nagel will exhibit his works at the Nevada Museum of Art, 160 West Liberty Street in Reno, from October 16 through November 28, 1993. The exhibit features 19 three-dimensional works in mixed media and oil on polyester and fiberglass.

Dr. Joseba Zulaika of the Basque Studies Program will present a lecture on “Symbolism in Basque Sculpture” at the gallery at noon on November 24.

Nairobi Group Visits BSP

Josu Iztueta, Jesus Ortiz, Dina Bilbao, and Josune Gorostidi are young Basques who are involved in sports year round. In order to fulfill their desire to meet the greatest possible personal challenges, they banded together to form the group Nairobi and tour various parts of the world. This year Nairobi began in Alaska. They toured on skis, from Fort Yukon to Skagway, then traveled by kayaks to Vancouver, British Columbia. From Vancouver they traveled south by bicycle through San Diego and on to Cabo San Lucas in Mexico. We were honored to have them visit the Basque Studies Program on May 13 and 14, 1993. Ondo ibili, Nairobitarrak!
