Nekane, the Lamiņa and the Bear

At last, a children’s book that is culturally Basque! Author Frank Araujo and artist Xiao Jun Li have created a beautiful full-color folktale storybook that will enchant every child from 6 to 66. The story is seasoned with a peppering of Basque words (and easy pronunciation guides) to add to the authentic flavor of the book. The watercolor illustrations are exquisite. No one can mistake Uncle Kepa’s house for anything but an authentic baserriko etxea, and although the characterizations escape stereotyping, his boina and bota bag are a nice touch.

The book is 10 1/2 x 9 inches in size, 32 pages in full color with a hardcover binding that will stand up well for dozens of readings.

Dr. Araujo has studied linguistics and anthropology and did his doctoral research among Basque sheepmen of California. Xiao Jun Li is an international children’s illustrator, artist, and nationally recognized calligrapher in China. He has won various awards for his work including the Sixth Noma Concours Award for Children’s Picture Book Illustrations.

This beautiful book, pitting quick-witted Nekane against the wily lamiņa, is sure to become a family favorite.
