Basque Studies Program Newsletter · Issue 48, 1993 Basque Cultural Day The San Francisco Basque Cultural Center and the Basque Educational Organization held their first Basque Cultural Day on October 9, 1993 in honor of the late Jean Leon Iribarren. The organizers--Nancy Zubiri and Christine Elicagaray--arranged a schedule of events that kept everyone busy all day. In the morning four speakers from the Basque Studies Program spoke to a dedicated group who stayed for three hours of lecture. Linda Whites talk was entitled Does Batua Have a Future in the U.S.? William A. Douglass spoke about Basque Identity: Past Perspectives and Future Prospects. Jose Mallea presented a selection of slides gleaned from his tree carving research and explained their significance. Carmelo Urza gave a brief presentation on the University Studies Abroad Consortium and its programs in the Basque Country. Chef Louis Marticorena, the manager of the Basque Cultural Center, gave a cooking demonstration at 11:00 a.m. In the afternoon there was a dance workshop, handball videos, two showings of the film Amerikanuak, and a pelota match. The day was capped off by dinner and dancing to the music of the Jean Flesher Band. In addition there were exhibits, gifts, chorizos, gateau basque, and an enthusiastic crowd. Organizers plan to hold another Cultural Day next year. Zorionak! (The Basque Cultural Center is located at 599 Railroad Avenue, South San Francisco, CA, or call (415) 583-8091.) |
