Teresa Laxalt Memorial Scholarship Awarded

The 1993-94 Teresa Laxalt Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Carmen Sarratea, who will be attending the University of Nevada, Reno for the 1993-94 school year. Ms. Sarratea plans to major in pre-veterinary medicine. She will receive $1,000 to help defray the costs of her education.

The Teresa Laxalt Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a Nevada resident of Basque descent attending the University of Nevada, Reno.

Tutorial Ph.D. Alive and Well

The Basque Studies Program offers an interdisciplinary Tutorial Ph.D. in Basque Studies, and this year four graduate students are taking advantage of this program to specialize in this area. Cameron Watson (from England) is pursuing his degree with an emphasis in history. He is currently doing field work in Euskadi. Magda Czajkowska (from Poland) is in her second year of class work toward the degree and is interested in folk literature. Pauliina Raento (from Finland) is pursuing her degree with an interest in human geography. Linda White (from the U.S.) is specializing in Basque language and literature.

The tutorial Ph.D. requires a great deal of self-motivation and a deep and abiding interest in Basque Studies. If you would like information on the Tutorial Ph.D. in Basque Studies, please contact:
