Basque Studies Program Newsletter · Issue 48, 1993 Hainbeste Jende! So Many People! Summer is always a busy time at the Basque Studies Program. Many scholars who wish to consult our collection must do so during the summer months. But 1993 brought more long-term visitors than ever to the BSP. Recipients of the Basque Studies Program Travel Stipend included Jacqueline Thursby (Bowling Green University), Natalie Morel-Borotra (researching music and history), Philippe de LaBorde-Pédelahore (researching the Inquisition), Teresa del Valle (University of the Basque Country, San Sebastián), Gorka Palazio (University of the Basque Country, Bilbao, accompanied by his wife Lourdes Villar), John Bieter and Mark Bieter (independent researchers from Boise, Idaho), and Steve Ybarrola (Central College, Pella, Idaho). Other long-term visitors included Jon Bilbao (Eusko Bibliographia), Mari Carmen Diez (University of the Basque Country, San Sebastián), Jerónima Echeverria (University of California, Fresno), Joseba Etxebarria (University of the Basque Country, Bilbao, accompanied by his wife Mariflor Mikelez), Cynthia Stinson (researching art), Begońa Etxeberria (researching immigration patterns and cultural assimilation), and Tom Weaver (University of Arizona). In addition, several Basques came to Reno to study English, including Tomás Zubimendi (UPV, Donostia), Jose Miguel Carrea (UPV, Donostia), Miel Anjel Elustondo Etxeberria (UPV, Vitoria), Joseba Martínez Cortés (graduate student in Economics) and Fultxo Crespo (EGB teacher from Nafarroa). These are some, but by no means all of the visitors we hosted this summer, drawn to this University by the presence of the Basque Studies Program and its research collection. |
