Highlights

William Douglass published an article entitled “D’autres Basques” on Basque emigration in the May (1994) issue of the French magazine Autrement devoted entirely to Basque culture.

Two previously published articles by William Douglass, “The Vanishing Basque Sheepherder” and “Inventing an Ethnic Identity: The First Basque Festival,” were reprinted in the collection of essays entitled Basques of the Pacific Northwest, edited by Richard W. Etulain and recently released by Idaho State University (Pocatello).

“As distancias do mariñeiro galego en Terranova,” by Joseba Zulaika, was published in Lindeiros da Galeguidade - II Simposio de Antropoloxia, X.A. Ferná ndez de Rota et al., eds., (Consello da cultura galega, 1993).

An article by Joseba Zulaika, “Artearen amodioagatik: Guggenheim eta euskaldunak,” appeared in Jakin no. 83, August 1994.

On June 24, 1994, the NABO Music Camp--48 students and 7 instructors--visited the Basque Studies Program. The annual camp was held this year in Reno. Children of all ages are taught Basque songs, dances, and musical instruments during the two-week camp, sponsored by North American Basque Organizations, Inc.

Joseba Zulaika published an article, “Violencia, texto y parodia,” in Antropología 6:37-64.

Jose Mallea published “Mexicoko lehen euskaldun meatzariak,” in Origen de la comunidad vasca en México, Koldo San Sebastian, ed. (Getxo-Gernika: Harriluze, 1993).

William Douglass published an articled entitled “‘Trionfo’ in Ingham. The Italian Community in North Queensland” in the Italian journal Studi Emigrazione 31 (113).

Basque Studies Program staff once again taught an Elderhostel session. Held May 15-21, 1994, on the UNR campus, the session featured classes on Basque history, music, language, cooking, mythology and culture.

William Douglass has an article entitled “Years and Careers” in the book Others Knowing Others (Don D. Fowler and Donald L. Hardesty, eds.) published by the Smithsonian Institution Press (Washington, D.C.).

Dr. Joseba Zulaika presented the following lectures while conducting research this summer in Euskadi: “Barandiaran Itziarren,” in Itziar on July 8; “The Cultural and Political Context of Basque Art,” at Arteleku in Donostia, July 27; and a talk on history and anthropology at the Udako Euskal Unibertsitatea (Basque summer school) in Iruña, July 21.
