Gabilondo Lectures

Joseba Gabilondo, former Professor of Literature at Duke University (curently at Bryn Mawr) and author of the book Californiatik Bihotzez, visited the Basque Studies Program in April as part of the Basque Lecture Series. Dr. Gabilondo’s talk was entitled, “On the Relocation of Basque Identities in the Global System, or When the New York Times Thinks that Bernardo Atxaga’s Obabakoak Is as Spanish as a Paella.”

Gabilondo is currently working on a book about Bernardo Atxaga, and his lecture was an insightful examination of the universality versus the Basqueness of Atxaga’s work. He also discussed the aspects of modernism and postmodernism in the work.

Dr. Gabilondo has lived in the United States for several years, and his book Californiatik Bihotzez (From California, with Love) provides a unique perspective on American culture from the Basque’s point of view.
